1. Attempt all the questions:

1. Lacan's psychoanalytic theory deals with the imaginary Order of past and the Symbolic Order of the present. Discuss how this concept is useful to interpret literature.
2. Discuss the relation between Freud's condensation and displacement with Lacan's metaphor and motenymy as they are used to interpret the  unconscious in literature.
3. Explain the similarities and differences between New Criticism and Deconstructive Criticism.

2. Interpret The Great Gatsby from Psychoanalytic or Feminist perspectives.
3. Illustrate the common principles of Structuralism and Deconstruction from the view point of Ferdinand de Saussure's Structural Linguistic

3.  Interpret the following poern using the main parameters from one of following literary theories:

It was six men of Indostan

Who went to see the Elephant

The First approached the Elephant

And happening to fall

"God bless me! But the Elephant

is very like a Wall!"

The second, Feeling of the tusk,

Cried, "Ho, What have we here,

So very round and smooth and sharp?

To me 'tis mighty clear T

his wonder of an Elephant

Is very like a SPEARE

The Third approached the animal.

And happening to take

The squirming trunk within his hands,

Thus boldly up and spake:

"I see," quoth he, the Elephant

 is very like a SNAKE!"

The Fourth reached out an eager hand,

And felt about the knee

"What most this wondrous beast is like

Is mighty plain," quoth he:

"Tis clear enough the Elephant

Is very like a TREE!"

The Fifth, who chanced to touch the ear,

Said: "E'en the blindest man

Can tell what this resembles most;

Deny the fact who can,

This marvel of an Elephant

Is very like a FAN!"

The Sixth no sooner had begun

About the beast to grope,

Then seizing on the swinging tail

That fell within his scope,

"I see," quoth he, "the Elephant

Is very like a ROPE!"

And so these men of Indostan

Disputed loud and long,

Each in his own opinion

Exceeding stiff and strong,

Though each was partly in the right.

And all were in the wrong!

4. Discuss the rhetorical strategy used by Alfred N. Whitehead in his essay "Religion and Science."

Or

Elucidate the rhetorical strategy used by Francis Bacon in his essay "Aphorisms Concerning the interpretation of Nature and the Kingdom of Man."

5.  Discuss what you think Aristotle meant by the following terms

imitation, unity, piry, discovery, suffering, pity and feur, spectacle, hamartia, catharisis.

6.  "A work of art is an expressive form created for our perception through sense or imagination, and what it expresses is human feeling. "Elaborate this statement from the viewpoint of Susanne K. Langer's essay "Expressiveness."

A paradox is a statement which seems self-contradictory yet can be shown to be 'logically sound. Find several examples of seeming paradoxes in Machiavelli's advice, and explain how her resolves them in his essay "The Qualities of the prince."
